About Hackney

The much-maligned London Borough of Hackney occupies a pivotal area of northeast London, with gentrified Islington to the west, the financial powerhouse of The City to the south, the 'old' East End of Tower Hamlets to the southeast and the up-and-coming transport nexus of Newham to the east.

Hackney has undeniable problems - big ones - ranging from high unemployment and crime to the parlous state of its education system. It never seems to have gained its fair share of the cake. There is no tube station on Hackney soil, no Premier League football team and no university - such as Islington, Tower Hamlets, Newham and/or Haringey can claim.

And yet - this is a vibrant and exciting place to live. Hackney is home to a diverse range of multi-cultural communities - Afro-Caribbean, Turkish, Kurdish, African, Vietnamese and Bangladeshi to name but a few - and this is reflected in the wide range of excellent cuisine and cultural events the borough offers. It shares honours with Tower Hamlets for housing the most concentrated community of artists and designers in Europe. And small entrepreneurs have found it a dynamic place to do business, as witnessed by the resurgence of Hackney's numerous high streets.

But this site is not about one borough alone. Hackney (borough) is merely an administrative division - the old Hackney is just one third of the modern borough. Hackneyites are paradigm cosmopolitans and look to their surrounding boroughs for commerce and entertainment as much as their own. So, this guide will focus on Northeast London as a whole, while never losing sight of Hackney's central position.
